Why it Makes Sense to Teach Preschool at Home
Last year I did preschool at home with my daughter (and I'll be doing it again this year). Because I’m a certified elementary teacher, I always knew this would be my plan. Several other moms I know also decided to do preschool at home with their children for a variety of reasons.
As a form of encouragement to other parents and caregivers, these other moms and I want to share our reasons for doing so. So if you’re on the fence about teaching preschool at home, read on to see why it’s a great idea.
"Why would I pay hundreds of dollars each month for someone else to teach my kid the ABCs?"
Preschool can get quite costly. If you don't need it for childcare reasons, you can save yourself a big chunk of change just by doing some short lessons on the basics (counting to 10, and identifying letters, colors, and shapes) at home.
"I suspect my son has ADHD since I see my husband's symptoms in him. I want to help him learn the basics in a setting that would be more conducive to his learning style."
Teaching at home allows you to tailor the learning experiences in a way that works best for your child(ren) and family.
"I was toying with the idea of homeschooling, and I felt like preschool was a safe way to try it out."
You don't have to be a certified teacher to help your child learn some basics. Since preschool isn't mandatory, it's low stakes. If it doesn't go well for some reason, you can always enroll the child in a preschool mid-way through the year, or just wait for kindergarten...it won't be a big deal.
I want my kids to have a Christian influence in their learning, but the private preschools are too expensive."
There are many arguments in favor of teaching preschool at home. If you’re reading this, you were probably already contemplating doing just that. I suggest you trust your instincts on this one.
