Sometimes the kids just have too much energy, ok, most of the time, really. So what do you do? Well, my daughter and I have discovered that there are a lot of great active toys out there that will help wear out the kids without the adults having to do very much at all.
Many of the toys listed here can be used indoors or outdoors.
I have purchased each of the items listed below (unless it was gifted to my daughter by a loved one), and my daughter has thoroughly enjoyed each of these items, which is why I'm recommending them.
Jammin' Gym by Educational Insights
This electronic "dumbbell" plays a beat and instructs kids to do simple exercise moves. It has soooo many different moves, my daughter hasn't gotten bored with it yet. (I roll out my yoga mat for Pooky to feel more like she's at the gym.)
My First Flybar Foam Pogo Jumper So Pooky asked for a pogo stick for Christmas. I wasn't about to buy my 4 year old a pogo stick until I saw this foam flexible jumper. She had a blast on it indoors all during our long, brutal winter. The version my daughter has counts her jumps and she likes to challenge herself to reach an increasingly higher number of jumps.
SKLZ Pro Mini Basketball and HoopThis is meant to hang over a door, but we decided that was too high for my daughter, so we hung it over the footboard of her bed, and now it's the perfect height for her and her preschool friends to play with.
Little Tikes 3' TrampolineMy daughter was given a regular mini trampoline, but I wish she'd gotten this one with handles. She's played with it at her cousin's house, I feel more comfortable with her using the handrail. Either way, I just turn on some tunes or music videos and she bounces away for a good deal of time burning off a ton of energy.
Juggling Dance Scarves I got the idea to use these when my daughter was only two. Her music teacher gave them to the children to play with while listening and dancing to music. We still use them frequently for our impromptu dance parties. When my daughter is feeling antsy, I just turn on some music and give her a scarf or two. They're really great to have on hand for play dates too!
Hopper Ball Just inflate the ball, and it provides hours of fun for kids. My daughter absolutely loves hers. I keep it stored out of sight, and when I think Pooky has a little too much energy, I bring out the Hopper Ball. It does the trick every time.
Geyser Blast Sprinkler Although, playing in the sprinklers requires a little prep (such as sunscreening the kids) and a little clean up after (or at least a change of clothes), it is a guaranteed way to wear out the kids. Just attach the hose and let the fun begin!
