Bessie, Queen of the Sky: a Modern Fairytale Review
As a modern woman and mother of a little girl, I find it extremely important to provide my daughter with positive female role models. The Queen Girls series has just made my life easier in that respect.
If you haven't heard of this inspirational series, that's because it is brand new! The first hardcopy book is not even in print yet. The first book in the series is Bessie, Queen of the Sky! written by Andrea Doshi and Jimena Duran. I was provided an electronic copy by these talented ladies, and my daughter and I have been enjoying it. 
It is a fairytale version of the real life of Elizabeth "Bessie" Coleman. Bessie faced much adversity in her quest to become a pilot. She was an African American girl from a small town in the early 1900's. Most people believed her dream was impossible and mocked her for attempting it. But Bessie had the passion, dedication, and confidence to persevere and overcome the obstacles in her way. She eventually became the first female African American pilot in the world. Now that's a role model for my daughter. 
In this modern fairy tale, Bessie's life story is told in language that children can relate to alongside beautiful dream-like images. I can't decide which I love more; the message of being brave and following your dreams against adversity, or the beautiful illustrations by Chiara Fabbri. Both are remarkable.
